Capability Across Wheelhead Types

Wheel sizes run from Ø300mm on universal machines to Ø900mm on heavy-duty machines, with wheel speeds from 35m/s on conventional abrasives to 60m/s on CBN. Diameter and tolerance ranges follow the machine each wheelhead is built into.

Parts with shoulders suit an angular head, mixed external and internal work suits a swivel or turret head, and high-volume paired features suit a twin head. Plain shafts rarely need more than a fixed straight head, so paying for a more complex head is only worthwhile when the part needs it.

  • Q: Which wheelhead should I choose for a shouldered shaft?
  • A: An angular head grinds the diameter and shoulder together, giving better squareness and shorter cycles than a straight head.
  • Q: When is a hydrostatic spindle worth the extra cost?
  • A: When finish, chatter control or very heavy cuts matter most, such as precision parts and heavy-duty grinding; hydrodynamic spindles cover most general and production work.
  • Q: Do I need a high-speed spindle for CBN wheels?
  • A: CBN wheels run at higher speeds, up to about 60m/s, so the spindle, wheel guard and coolant system must be specified for it; it cannot simply be added later to every machine.
  • Q: Can I change the wheelhead type later?
  • A: Wheelhead layout is built into the cross-slide and bed design, so changing type usually means a different machine; tell us your plans so we choose the right one at order time.
  • Q: What is the typical lead time?
  • A: Fixed and angular heads typically ship in 60–90 days, swivel and turret heads in 70–100 days, and heavy-duty heads in 110–150 days.
