Intro

The angular head grinding machine mounts the wheelhead at a fixed angle to the workpiece axis, typically 30°, so one wheel grinds a diameter and its adjoining shoulder in a single infeed. It is the standard answer for parts where the shoulder must be square to the diameter.

Parts Covered

Spindles, transmission and pinion shafts, bearing seats against a shoulder, valve parts and stepped shafts, from Ø10–200mm, in hardened or case-hardened steel. Shoulder face height is limited by the wheel corner geometry, typically a few tens of millimeters of radial depth.

Limits to Know About

The shoulder face is ground by the wheel's side edge, so its finish and flatness are good but not equal to a dedicated face wheel on very large faces. The wheel corner also wears faster, which is why corner dressing is triggered by part count.
